In Friends of Marian's words...
The name Marian Bergeson is synonymous with public service in Orange County. Whether serving on a school board, on the Orange County Board of Supervisors, as a member of the State Assembly or Senate, or as the California Secretary of Education, she devoted her life to making life better for those in need in Orange County. Marianís leadership was instrumental in the success of dozens of nonprofits over the years, chief among them Orangewood Foundation, which supports foster youth in Orange County.
The Marian Bergeson Scholarship Endowment honors Marian's lifelong commitment to education, especially at Samueli Academy Public Charter High School (www.samueliacademy.org). Samueli Academy was founded by and is a program of Orangewood Foundation and offers educationally under-served communities a new choice for the high school education of their teens. Now in its fourth year, the Academy is thriving in Santa Ana.The Marian Bergeson Scholarship Endowment will help foster youth at Samueli Academy to realize their dream of a college education and serve as a living legacy to the grace, leadership and commitment to Orange County of Marian Bergeson.
We are restarting this My Orangewood campaign at this time to celebrate Marianís tremendous legacy as we celebrate the first graduating class at Samueli Academy.

Orangewood Foundation invites you to join us in giving Orange County foster youth the support, resources and encouragement they need to become happy, self-sufficient adults. Did you know that in Orange County alone, there are almost 3,000 children in the foster care system at any time? Of those, over 200 will age out of the system (emancipate) at age 18 this year. Without help, their future looks bleak. Approximately 65% will emancipate with no place to live. Less than 2% will graduate from college (46% will not even graduate from high school). For every dollar donated, $0.90 goes directly to Orangewood programs focused on education, employment, housing, life skills and basic needs. In our 30+ year history we have helped over 74,000 kids find their wings and soar. Beyond our programs, for thousands of foster children Orangewood means “family,” “opportunity” and “hope.”
